In Memoriam Julia Cefalo 1/2/2025
Julia Grace (Martensen) "Jill" Cefalo, passed away at Kaplan Family House in Danvers on January 2nd, 2025 after a long illness. She was 72.

She is survived by her husband, Frederick Cefalo "Fred" of Gloucester, MA, her daughter, Ariel Cefalo and her partner, James Fitzpatrick of Melrose, MA, her daughter Jill "Jilly" Cefalo of Prague, Czechia, her grandrabbit, Petr Rupaul Rabbit Cefalo, also of Prague, her brother Murdock "Doc" Martensen of Washington state and a large extended family including many nieces, nephews, first and second cousins. She is predeceased by both her parents, Arthur Otto Martensen and Julia Grace (Murdock) Martensen, and her sister, Christine Meuse of Florida.

Jill believed in kindness. As a little girl, she attended "Golden Rule" nursery school. The "golden rule," with its reminder to "treat others as how you would want to be treated" became her north star for the rest of her life, guiding her and shedding its warm light on her every relationship and interaction.

Wife, mother, sister, teacher, friend. Jill was married to Frederick Cefalo for nearly 43 years. Theirs was a partnership characterized by mutual respect, trust, understanding, and a willingness to listen to each other, no matter how difficult the conversation. Jill was the mother to two daughters, Ariel and Jilly (Jill), "her girls." As a mother, she gave them the gifts of creativity and kindness, accountability and respect, and always allowed them enough room to be themselves. She was a sister, the youngest of three children born to Arthur Otto Martensen and Julia Grace (Murdock) Martensen on April 6th, 1952.

Jill was a lifelong teacher, beginning her career in Early Childhood education and eventually transitioning to the role of classroom paraprofessional in the Melrose public schools, serving as a support for children with unique learning needs. Her ability to meet every child where they were at academically and emotionally had an incredible impact on her students, many of whom she still kept in touch with.

Jill was a dear friend to many and nurtured many friendships from many phases of her life, from her girlhood to her college years and beyond. She loved to discover old friends on Facebook and delighted in this ability to reconnect and keep in contact with them.

Jill enjoyed traveling, reading, a good reality tv show, crossword puzzles on her phone, and sharing baby animal videos on Instagram and Facebook. She loved to laugh and had a wicked sense of humor. She was creative and artistic and over the years had participated in projects like sewing, photography, and watercolor painting. She was an incredible cook and grill master. She made Christmases and birthdays feel magical and hosted large gatherings of extended family and friends on holidays. She enjoyed her homes in Gloucester, sitting in the sun, reading a book or watching the light change on the marsh.

She would often remind her family that "we are so blessed."

Jill left a legacy of kindness. There is no greater gift than that.

Relatives and friends are warmly invited to gather in honor of Jill's life during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Tuesday, January 7 from 4-7pm, and for her Graveside Service at Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St., Melrose on Thursday, January 9 at 12:30pm.

In Memoriam William J. Doiron 2/4/2025
William "Bill" J. Doiron, III passed away peacefully on Feb. 4, 2025. He was 87 years old. Born March 27, 1937 in Augusta, Maine, Bill was the oldest child of William Jr. and Florence (Albert) Doiron.

Bill was a proud graduate of Cony High School (class of 1956) and Norwich University (class of 1960). He served in the United States Army honorably and was proud to be a veteran.

Bill married the love of his life, Nadine "DeeDee" Dick in 1960 and together they raised five children. Their home was always open to all and was the neighborhood hang-out spot! Mom and Dad never 'batted an eye' at more people and friends at their home.

Bill had a dedicated career working for the State of Maine Job Service division. He rarely missed work and was a reliable and dependable co-worker.

Bill was a proud member of Le Club Calumet and served on numerous committees and volunteered often at events. At one time, he was the dishwasher and thought it was fun! He served as President in 1982 and was a 'lifetime member' - his favorite day of the week was Monday; member meeting night! He loved catching up with his friends. He was known for his collection of frogs and many frog shirts! He was proud of his French heritage and 'being a frog' and would explain this to anyone willing to listen.

Bill loved sports and his life often "revolved" around the seasons - sports seasons! He was a loyal and true New England fan who enjoyed the many highs and lows of his teams. Bill was very social and funny. He was always ready with a joke! This probably started with high school parties in his family rumpus room, numerous Le Club Calumet activities and continuing into his recent years at Granite Hill Estates! He was a constant at Daily BINGO, Baking in the Bistro, Live Music time and of course "Friday Social Hour."

Although Bill loved to travel and explore new places, his favorite place was with Dee Dee -Including his camp on Pleasant Pond, the Calumet Club dance floor, at a sporting event cheering on his kids or grandkids, sharing a "nice supper" at home and watching "his shows".

Bill and Dee Dee shared 53 years of marriage, modeling what a true partnership of love meant. They made a great team, shared responsibilities, put each other first and simply adored each other! Dad was a "hands-on' Dad before it was even "a thing"! He rarely if ever missed our events! If it was important to his kids ~ it was important to him!

All of his children were properly taught correct etiquette and strategy of the game of cribbage. It was a rite of passage to move from the kid's table and play at the adult's table. He demonstrated proper cribbage etiquette as recently as a few weeks ago and not only winning ~ but skunking his opponent! A standard "good game" handshake concluded the match.

Bill was predeceased by his wife and love of his life of 53 years, Dee Dee and a son, John Doiron.

Bill is survived by his children Daniel Doiron and wife Glenda of Augusta, Sandra and husband Jeff Belanger of Augusta, Duffy and partner Carolyn Collins of Barrington, RI, and Andrew Doiron and wife Mindy of Augusta; grandchildren Derek, Kayla, Nick, Abbie, and Emma and great grandchildren Greyson and Maddie; brothers: Bob Doiron and Armand Doiron as well as several special nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Granite Hill Estates who allowed him to be as independent as possible while providing such caring and helpful support. We would also like to thank the amazing care staff at Glenridge Comfort Care - blessed that his stay was brief but comfortable.

Relatives and friends may visit on Thursday, February 13th from 9-10:30 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where officers and members of Le Club Calumet are asked to meet at 9 AM to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 13th at 11 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta. Burial will be in the spring in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

The family requests that donations in Bill's memory be made to either: Calumet Educational Foundation, PO Box 2085, Augusta, ME, 04338, or Sense for Kids, c/o Augusta School Department, 12 Gedney St., Augusta, ME, 04330.

In Memoriam Frank E. Mazza 2/7/2025
Frank Mazza passed away at Greenwich Hospital on February 7, 2025, just short of his 90th birthday. He was a lifelong Greenwich native, the son of Antonio P. Mazza, also a lifelong Greenwich resident, and Viola Jensen Mazza. Frank is survived by his two sons and their wives, Stephen and Tammy of Brewster, NY, and Robert and Lucy of Greenwich, CT, as well as his two beloved grandsons, Taylor and Zack. Frank is also survived by his three nieces, Sherry Delany of Greenwich, Susan Blair of Fountain Inn, South Carolina, and Stephanie Einsiedler of Kennebunk, Maine.

After graduating from Greenwich High School, where he was a varsity football player, Frank attended Norwich University – The Military College of Vermont, where he graduated with an engineering degree and went on to serve as a lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. After serving his country, he had a successful career as a civil engineer. However, Frank's true calling was public service in the Town of Greenwich, where he served multiple terms as a Selectman, served on the BET, was Chairman of the Harbor Management Commission, and led his most gratifying project as Chairman of the Glenville School Building Committee, where both of his grandsons attended.

Frank's great passion was boating, and he could be found most summer days out on the water on his boat or spending time at the Mianus River Boat and Yacht Club, where he was a founding member and past Commodore. He also developed a lifelong love of Vermont and skiing from his time at Norwich University, a passion that he passed on to both his sons and grandsons.

Frank was a man of character and integrity who strived to stay involved and improve the town he called home his entire life. He was a proud father and grandfather and a loyal friend. He will be missed dearly by all.

In Memoriam Christopher U. Mulholland 1/24/2025
Christopher Ulrich Mulholland, Major, US Marine Corps (retired), age 66 of Chesapeake, passed away peacefully at home with his family surrounding him on Friday, January 24, 2025 of Lou Gehrig's disease. Born 9 March 1958 in Oxford, England, he was the eldest of two sons of the late Iris (Frese) Mulholland of Chesapeake and Daniel Mulholland of Somerville, Mass.

Chris spent many of his formative years growing up in the small German village of Hesperinghausen in Northern Hesse, the same village where his mother's family traces their roots back to in the early 1600s.

In April 1982, he married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Langone - they first met at a Friendly's Ice Cream in Massachusetts.

A graduate of Norwich University in Vermont, Chris was commissioned an infantry officer in the Marine Corps in 1980 and retired after 20 years of honorable and decorated service, to include tours in Beirut, Lebanon and Northern Iraq. The Corps brought him to Chesapeake in 1991. He was a graduate of the Naval War College and earned a Masters from ODU. The family loved the community so much, they never left. After his retirement from active service in 2000, Chris worked the next 21 years as a government contractor.

He began his life-long passion with soccer as a five year old player in Germany and he became a successful player, coach, and - most of all - a referee. As a player he won numerous number of team and individual awards. As a USSF licensed coach he managed teams from U8B to men's division 1. But it was as a referee that he had his greatest success. Before his retirement from the active ranks, he was one of the top 200 USSF referees in the country and working top professional matches up and down the East coast. He taught and mentored thousands of referees around the globe

In 2004, he and his son Kevin became involved with power soccer (powered wheelchair soccer) and he led the development of the International Laws of the Game. He was the first Director of International Referees for the Federation Internationale de Powerchair Football Association (FIPFA) and the first VP of the US Power Soccer Association (USPSA). He and Kevin stood up the Virginia Power Soccer Association (VPSA) and formed the Tidewater Piranhas who have twice earned silver at nationals.

He was the lead referee at the inaugural 2007 World Cup in Tokyo and traveled the globe, teaching other referees, guiding the establishment and development of new national programs, and being an ambassador for the sport. He officiated the European national and club championships, the Americas Cup, the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Sudamerica, and numerous US National Championships.

After his ALS diagnosis, the wheel turned and he became a player again, this time in power soccer. With his first game he made some historic firsts: first parent-child duo to play in a sanctioned power soccer match, and first athlete with ALS to play competitive soccer in US - and probably world - history. Besides playing with his son Kevin, scoring five goals in nine regular season matches, and winning silver at the 2022 National Championships, he was proud of earning the only yellow card on the team!

Chris was extremely involved in helping his community and serving others; a 40 year member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) he served as the Commander of VFW Post 2894 and as the National Deputy Chief of Staff. He also served as a Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 8240, earning numerous national awards with both organizations including six consecutive VFW All American Post awards. Within the city of Chesapeake, he served on a number of commissions and committees. He served in leadership positions for a variety of local, national, and international soccer and referee associations; and with the Boy Scouts as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 57 and Advancement Chairman with Troop 57. Of his original ten Tiger Cubs, six earned Eagle Scout.

Chris was an avid reader (mostly histories) with a personal library of more than 2,000 books. He was also an 'amateur' genealogist, with more than 41,000 individuals in his family tree. On his paternal grandmother's side, the family traces their roots back to the 1620 Mayflower landing at Plymouth Rock. On his Mulholland line, the family arrived in 1850 North America during the worst of the potato famine in Ireland. He wrote numerous biographies about various ancestors. His youngest son, Christopher, is the 15th generation to serve in an American uniform, going back to the Ancient and Honourable Artillery Company of Massachusetts in 1638.

An accomplished multi-sport athlete himself, Chris loved watching his New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox, and Boston Celtics win. He has been a rabid fan of the German national soccer team since watching them play in the 1966 World Cup. While watching sports on TV he would amaze those around him by calling fouls and penalties long before anyone else, including the announcers, saw them.

Chris had the Irish gift of gab and loved to meet new people. He would typically start with, "So where are you from?" Within a few minutes, he and they would be good friends. If they were from another country, he usually had a couple of words for them in their language. If they were from New York, he would tease them unmercifully as a Boston fan, but it always ended in laughter and camaraderie. His Facebook friends span the globe.

Whatever Chris attempted, he was extremely successful at. Despite coming from a family full of thumbs, he enjoyed building things with his hands. He first picked up a rifle and pistol when he entered the Corps and became a successful competitive shooter. He never did anything with less than 150% effort. He loved to travel with Barbara, particularly off the beaten trail. He loved to cook. He loved the outdoors. He loved telling 'dad jokes.' He loved a house full of kids and friends. He lived with gusto, he laughed with gusto, and he loved with gusto.

After his diagnosis of Lou Gehrig disease on Friday the 13th, November 2020, Chris became a fierce and passionate advocate for veterans battling ALS. He developed a checklist for other veterans who receive an ALS diagnosis. He organized and led three teams that raised $23,000 for the Walk Against ALS. He wrote an OpEd, "ALS Is Killing Veterans," that was published world-wide by the Military Times (October 28, 2021.) He authored a resolution, "Combating ALS in the Veteran Community," which was unanimously passed by the VFW's 123rd National Convention and calls upon Congress to dedicate more resources for veterans stricken with ALS. He was featured in a nationally shown news story titled "Veterans Voices".

Chris used to say, "My blood type and view on life are both the same: B Positive!"

He always closed his correspondence with, "I will fight this battle till my dying breath." And he did, and continued his battle even after death by donating his brain to ALS research.

In Memoriam Gary D. Wilkins 6/10/2024
Gary Dennis Wilkins was born on July 1, 1953 in Massena, NY to Alma and Denny Wilkins. He was a loving, thoughtful and generous soul who cared for his family, young and old. He passed away Monday, June 10, 2024 in Port Charlotte, Florida.

His life was filled with adventure, love for his family and a passion for his work and science. He could answer any question his kids came up with, no matter how obscure. After a long day at the office or in the yard, he liked to sit back and relax by watching old TV shows with his wife Sofia, listening to oldies or playing solitaire and fixing electronics.

Gary graduated from Holy Family High School in Massena and then attended Norwich University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a Minor in Photography. He later completed his Master's Degree at Syracuse University. Due to his natural curiosity, he was a student throughout his life, always seeking more knowledge. He passed his knowledge on to his kids and also to his community through his years of scouting.

He attempted to do things himself - be it fixing a car, clearing a field, or excavating for a pool that his kids wouldn't stop bothering him about - and he found joy in his projects, especially the most difficult.

He adored animals and animals adored him. He always managed to find a cat or a dog who needed a home. His most recent pet, Darby the cat, was a constant fixture on his lap even when times were getting tough.

His career in the United States Air Force brought him all over the world, bringing back souvenirs and stories to his family. Sofia enjoyed bringing the kids to the airport to greet Gary when he returned from a trip. Being an Electrical Engineer gave him a tremendous amount of experience with computers and other electronics. He would never throw anything out that was broken, with the promise that one day, he would fix it.

A true traveler in life, he knew the road well, and he knew where he could find good malted milkshakes. He drove endless miles, alone or with his family. He was truly a big thinker, so when he said he was going to buy a mountain in Mexico, you believed he could have. On his road trips, every missed turn became an adventure and a story to laugh about later. You had to know that when Gary said he had a "shortcut", the trip was going to take several hours longer than expected.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Denny Wilkins, his grandparents, many aunts and uncles to whom he looked up to, cousins, two nephews - Charlie and Carl Elie Girard - and his gentle kitty, Darby, and other cherished pets.

Gary's journey through life was shared with his beloved wife of 49 years, Sofia, a partnership that was a source of immense joy and support. Together, they raised a loving family that includes their four children: Dennis, David (Rosemarie Guieb), Desiree (Christopher Ludovici), and Darcy (Andrew Miller) Wilkins. Gary's children considered him a best friend with a quirky and forgiving nature. Gary's legacy continues with his grandchildren Bob (Bella Medlin) Guieb Jr., Samuel Ludovici (who inherited Gary's affinity for taking things apart), Henry Wilkins-Miller (who got Gary's love of history and knowledge of the military), and Havalina Wilkins-Miller (who inherited Gary's mischievous nature), and great-grandchildren Braelyn and Brantley.

Gary was a wonderful big brother to his vibrant sister Vicky Thursby, hilarious brother George Wilkins (Maggie) and generous sister Sue Wilson (Art). He was most happy and animated when he visited his homeland of Massena, where he would while away hours talking with his uncle Carl (who has passed), sister-in-law Lorenza, and Barb (who was like an older sister to him), before hitting the road again. In addition to those loved ones listed above, Gary is survived by several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Douglas T. Jacobson VA Nursing Home for the care they provided Gary when he was no longer able to live at home. Please feel free to share your Gary stories; the family will love reading them and find comfort in them.

A memorial service will be held in Massena, NY at a later date.

Donations can be made in his honor to American Brain Foundation, Dementia Society of America, or Alzheimer's Association.
